An open Letter to Chuck Schumer

Dear Senator Schumer:

It’s time for you to resign from your leadership position, and from the Senate.

We are in the midst of a dire constitutional crisis. Our country is faced with an ongoing coup d’etat perpetrated by Donald Trump – a continuation of the coup he started on January 6, 2021.

Daryl Cagle / politicalcartoons.comhe started on January 6, 2021.

Our country is under siege from enemies within. Essentially, it’s a war. The preliminary stages, true. But a war nonetheless. And if left unchecked, it may actually devolve into a shooting war such as we last had in 1861. Or alternately, we could end up subjugated, and living under tyranny.

This is by far the most serious threat our country has ever faced in its long, storied history. If allowed unchecked, Trump’s obvious goal is to make himself king. And right now, it looks like he may be winning.

There has been no real resistance to Trump. The Vichy Republicans have totally abrogated their Constitutional responsibilities, and the Democrats are all in disarray, still apparently shellshocked from the loss of the 2024 election. There has been no effective opposition to Trump and his plans by anyone in Congress.

Daryl Cagle / politicalcartoons.comIf that is going to change, the Democrats must present a unified front and act as a block to thwart Trump and his ambitions.

And I should point out that it’s a fool’s errand to rely on the courts to check Trump’s ongoing attempt to destroy our democracy. The judiciary, sadly, are not our saviors.

Your conduct, particularly, in recommending senators vote in favor of the CR was irresponsible and unacceptable. You have shown yourself wholly unfit to lead the Senate minority.

If there’s any chance at all to save our democracy, it will take bold, swift and decisive actions on the part of Congress. You have shown yourself incapable of such conduct.

Therefore, please resign your leadership position at once. You should also resign your Senate seat at the same time so Governor Hochul can appoint someone more fitting.
