What did Trump do?
Well for a starter, he’s hiring racists and bigots for the top spots in his administration. Why is that a big deal? Because it presages some very fundamental changes in our society undoing many of the cornerstones our republic: freedom of religion, freedom from discrimination because of sex, race or ethnic origin.
But Trump’s affronts to the American republic didn’t stop with hiring racists and bigots.
He’s hiring a climate change denier to head the EPA, which he’s apparently thinking of dismantling. I’ve heard Scott Walker’s name is in consideration for the head of the Labor Department – so he can do for the nation what he did for Wisconsin. A former Goldman Sachs employee (Steven Mnunchin) is being floated to run the Treasury Department. I suppose Sarah Palin will become the head of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. On and on. If you go down his list of current and prospective nominees, they’re almost all completely antithetical to the areas they would be regulating. Many are also current or former lobbyists. This is the way Trump’s going to drain the swamp?
But wait, there’s much, much more:
Trump’s failure to put his businesses into a blind trust will inevitably create humongous conflicts of interest. No, having his kids run the company doesn’t qualify or do anything to remove the risks. Do you suppose he and his kids won’t talk biz? Right. As long as he has a say in his business affairs, he’s vulnerable to blackmail and/or conflicts of interest.
An example: Deutsche Bank (DB) holds about $300 million in Trump loans, but they’re in trouble: The US Department of Justice has demanded the gigantic German bank pay $14 billion to settle claims regarding its sale of bad mortgage-backed securities in the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis. Now as President, Trump hires the Attorney General who will oversee the case against Deutsche Bank. What if DB suddenly wanted to blackmail Trump by abruptly calling in their $300 million in loans? Would Trump be predisposed to tell the AG to back off on the case against DB?
Whose interests is he going to put first? The $300 million in loans – money he’d have to come up with out of his own pocket to pay off – or the interests of the United States? He’s got a tremendous potential for conflict.
Then just a couple days ago, he met with the Argentine president, and according to their press, talked with the president about expediting a tower he was building in Buenos Aires. Then there was the meeting with the Indian businessmen about his interests in Mumbai.
It’s completely obvious he will retain control of his many business interests – either directly or through his surrogates, which for all intents and purposes is the same thing. He’s turning the United States government into an operating unit of Trump International. That doesn’t disturb you?
Continuing on, he’s going to blow off many of our longstanding alliances – like NATO, for example. He’s also said that he thinks it’s okay that other countries develop their own nuclear weapons so they can defend themselves (there goes the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty).
This all is tremendously destabilizing. Donald Trump’s plans would make the world a much more dangerous place – for everyone.
And not only that, but this is a man who in his first National Security briefing, reportedly asked, not once, not twice, but three times, “We’ve got all these nukes. Why is it we can’t use them?” No shit!
But there are still way more travesties of justice being foisted on the American public.
He’s going to deport all the “criminal” immigrants and start a registry for everyone else. This is similar to what Hitler did in the early 30’s with Jews, homosexuals, Gypsies, clerics, communists, intellectuals and labor leaders (and everyone else he disliked).
Trump’s going to “open up” the libel laws so he can hold the press “accountable” for writing “bad” things about him. This speaks to the return of the concept of seditious libel (you can’t criticize the President, and if it’s true, it’s particularly egregious). This is another tool the Nazi’s used to liquidate their opposition. There goes the First Amendment.
And then there’s the stupid wall along the Mexican border he’s going to make them pay for. If that doesn’t get us into a war with Mexico, I’m not sure what would. In the words of the former Mexican President, Vincente Fox, “…I’m not going to pay for that fucking wall! He should pay for it. He’s got the money.”
Then moving along, right now, the man has – count ’em – 74 lawsuits pending against him. Then there was the Trump University fraud case he just settled for $25 million. Would an innocent man pay $25 million in cash to settle?
This is not a man fit to hold any public office at all, much less be President of the United States.
Trump is a narcissist, and an egomaniac. He’s a proven pathological liar and a braggart. He has the attention span of a 5 year old. He’s vengeful, spiteful and crude. A misogynist who’s on tape bragging about grabbing women by the pussy – a sexual assault – and forcing himself on them – rape – because he’s famous and can get away with it.
He’s a vulgar man. Extrapolating a bit, I can see him selling used cars on the Whitehouse lawn. Soon.
His daughter Ivanka has already started hawking Whitehouse jewelry, “As seen on 60 Minutes.” His son in law Jared Kushner, who it appears will be advising him closely on national security matters was, according to his secondary school teachers, a “mediocre” student who was only able to get into Harvard because of a $2.5 million “donation” to the school from his father.
Trump has cheapened and degraded the office of the President of the United States and the country as a whole.
That injures us all.
